Housing a binturong

Because binturongs are native to the warm climates of China, Indonesia, Philippines, and Cambodia, they are unsuited for cold weather. In captivity, they need housing that ensures they stay warm enough so they don’t risk illness or frostbite. From an early age, binturongs can climb and are master escape artists. They require an enclosure with a ceiling and a secure door. Den boxes will give them a quiet place to enjoy some solitude.

Diet for binturong

Although binturongs are carnivores, they eat mostly fruits. They will, however, hunt for insects, small rodents, and birds. For binturongs in captivity, it is recommended that they are offered a diet that is as close to their natural diet as possible. They should be allowed to pick fruit right from the stem and search for insects on their own.

Enrichment for binturongs

Binturongs are natural born climbers. They love an enclosure with trees or climbing toys that allow them the opportunity to flex their climbing muscles. They also enjoy splashing around in shallow water so a wading pool or kiddie pool can be places in their space. Swings, such as tire swings, hollowed out tree stumps, and puzzle toys will help keep the binturongs engaged.

Breeding Binturongs

Although there is no specific mating season for binturongs in the wild, it seems that there are higher occurrences of mating every few months, in February, April, July, and November. Female binturongs are pregnant for about three months before giving birth to between one and three cubs. The cubs are tiny, only about the size of a fist, but are fully weaned in two months and reach adulthood in one year. Wild binturongs live about ten to fifteen years, but in captivity, they can reach 25 years of age.
